SF Home Security Tips You Can Begin Using Today
- Choose a high quality deadbolt and make sure it is always locked, even when you are at home. The deadbolt should extend for at least 1” into the strike plate. San Francisco Locksmiths recommends Schlage and Mul-T-Lock.
- Entrance doors should have multiple locking points: for example, use both a deadbolt AND doorknob.
- When away from home never make it obvious that you are gone: leave lights, a stereo and TV on; ask a neighbor to park his car in your driveway; ask a friend to pickup your mail and newspaper. Burglars will see these as signs that you’re home—and move on to their next target.
- Choose solid wood or steel doors: hollow wood doors can be easily kicked in!
- If your home or business has a glass window within 40’ from a lock, install a double-sided cylindrical lock.
- Locks must be re-keyed or changed after you move in—remember, you have no idea who the last tenant/owner gave his/her keys to.
- Install peepholes with magnifying lenses on your doors—they’ll permit you to see who’s at your door—without opening it.
- Keep doors, windows and vulnerable areas well-lit at night.
- Use automatic timers or motion detectors to turn lights on and off—especially when you are away from home.
- Never leave notes on your door (even when you are home.)
- Remove any branches that are near, or next to your home to prevent access to the second floor.
- Secure all windows and sliding glass doors with a secondary security bar.
- Permanently mark your valuables to make it easier for the police to return them to you should they be stolen. (Social Security numbers and driver’s license numbers with a state abbreviation work best.) Remember to keep a record of your marked valuables.
- If you leave a spare key outside, think creatively: burglars routinely check under flowerpots and welcome mats and on window ledges.
- In office buildings or workplaces with security concerns a Master Key System (link: locksmith services) can offer different access levels to different people.
- Team up with your neighbors and form a crime watch program. Your local police can help you get started.
- In apartment buildings, always make sure common area doors are locked and secure; don’t allow lobby access to any person you don’t know personally.
How Safe are Your Home—and Family? Some Unpleasant Realities:
- There is a 1 in 6 chance that your home will be burglarized.
- Over 80% of residential burglaries occur using the victim’s front door.
- About two-thirds of burglaries occur during daylight hours.
- In the US, a burglary occurs every 13.7 seconds!
- More than half of burglaries will leave no evidence of forced entry—because the bad guys use methods like lock picking, key bumping, unauthorized keys or other devices which leave no outward marks.
How Safe is Your Home? Test Your Home’s Security
- 1. Does anyone have (or have they ever had) access to your keys?
- 2. Do your current keys protect against unauthorized key duplication without I.D. verification?
- 3. Do your current locks provide physical protection against lock picking, key bumping, drilling or other forced entry attempts
